For her solo debut—2006’s Rabbit Fur Coat, recorded with The Watson Twins—Rilo Kiley singer Jenny Lewis (who plays the Epiphany Church on Friday) crafted an introspective, confessional, singer-songwriter record that skewed a little bit folk, a little bit country, a little bit gospel, and a good deal removed from the space most of her indie-rock contemporaries currently inhabit. Her follow-up, Acid Tongue, due out Tuesday, is an all-star affair and will include “Carpetbaggers,” her duet with Elvis Costello, not to mention appearances by Zooey Deschanel, M. Ward, Paz and Ana Lenchantin of A Perfect Circle, and Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes.
Of course, not all of Lewis' collaborations are such a good fit. To help promote Acid Tongue, the singer has posted some head-scratching album-related sketches to YouTube. Hardcore Lewis fans will realize she's no stranger to awkward acting: She was in The Wizard, 1989's glorified Nintendo commercial with Fred Savage. But to see Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard and vocalist Johnathan Rice add "acting" to their résumés (and to hear the title track off Acid Tongue) hunker down for this:
