Go For The Opener: The Decemberists at Metro

Decemberists

Welcome to Go For The Opener, in which we at The A.V. Club plead that if you’re getting ready to see a big concert, that you be sure to get there early and pay attention to the opening acts.

The big show: The Decemberists at Metro tonight

The openers: Heartless Bastards

Why you should listen: Before settling in to watch The Decemberists play an entire concept album (this year's The Hazards Of Love), Ohio's Heartless Bastards should help you satisfy any lingering impatience to rock out. Lead Bastard Erika Wennerstrom's songs don't lack for reflection or nuance, but at their best, they're direct and forthright in a way that few bands could pull off with such personality. The chords that burst out of Wennerstrom's guitar on the opening title track of this year's The Mountain are comforting in their simplicity and warmth, and the song also offers a touch of windy drama that the band hasn't explored much before. Wennerstrom's voice undercuts its bluesy rumble with a rather tender sense of melody—a reminder that meat-and-potatoes rock 'n' roll can have a surprisingly agreeable side. Our Madison brethren know from firsthand experience that Heartless Bastards are a rousing, tight live band, so have your intended hold onto your waistcoat for a few and get some fist-pumping done before the theatrics begin.
