Amanda might not think Graham Elliot is special.
Since sifting through dull newspapers, hyperbolic blogs, and overflowing RSS feeds for meaningful news can be an arduous process, News Net catches and compiles both the amusing and the significant reports that were overlooked throughout the workweek. Here are some things to think about as the weekend begins.
• Drama in Graham Elliot world. Yelper Michael J., whom Eater called a “foochebag,” posted a bad review on the review site for Grahamwich, Elliot’s new sandwich shop. The problem? The place isn’t even open yet. The now-removed review read,” My wife and I were downtown and had recently read a review of Graham Elliot Bowles new endever [sic], a sandwich shop. The Chicago magazine made it seem like an enteresting [sic] spot and Chef Bowles is a happening food personality, the only problem is the joint isn't open yet. It was a pleasant walk ruined…” In even more Internet douchery, Yelpers took to the site after Elliot tweeted the review, writing positive reviews based on speculation and a love of “graham crackers and sandwiches.” The restaurant is scheduled to open this fall.
• Ludacris will be poppin’ bottles at Binny’s South Loop Sept. 11. Bottles of his cognac, Conjure, that is, which Binny’s describes as “a unique blend of young and old cognacs that features the full and smooth finish of a quality French cognac combined with the mixability of a lighter spirit. “ Struggling rappers, take note: This would also probably be the perfect time to awkwardly freestyle for him at great length.
• Leo’s Coney Island is opening a new location in the Loop. The Detroit-style hot dog joint just opened on Southport in February, and planning’s still in the early stages for the new space, but they’re looking at more of a counter-type space than a full dining room.
• Perez Hilton reports that ex-Hills “star” Kristen Cavallari is dating Bears QB Jay Cutler. The two were allegedly “all over each other, ‘kissing and acting all in love’” at Angels and Kings this week.
• Mayor Daley has convened a panel of tech industry experts, with the express purpose of luring more Groupon-like businesses to the Windy City. In fact, the panel features Groupon employees, as well as staffers from Open Table, Callpod, Google, and Navteq. Considering how much money Groupon’s kicking into the Chicago tax base, who can blame the guy?
• A cyclist was killed earlier this week as he rode on the Dan Ryan Expressway. Christopher Hippchen, of Edgewater, was riding the wrong way in the express lanes around 55th Street when he tried to cross the whole highway, and was struck.
