Hear Netherfriends’ new single, “Bloomington, IN”
The A.V. Club was pleased when Sufjan Stevens followed enough of his 50 states promise to capture the Land of Lincoln on record—even though cementing Rock River Valley’s unemployment rate in music history wasn’t quite as flattering. But his self-admitted PR move left millions of other Americans songless. What about the poor souls in Montana, left alone with the buffalo? Or the denizens of the always forgotten, probably not-so-notable New Hampshire? These Americans deserve just as much recognition as the mountain men of Michigan’s U.P.
Chicagoan Shawn Rosenblatt took it upon himself to complete a 50 states, 50 tracks challenge—but this guy actually succeeded. Instead of completing 50 albums, his project Netherfriends set out to write and record one track in each state. Chicago’s Kilo Records will release the first 12 tracks on the album Middle America in February. Listen to the first single of the project, “Bloomington, IN,” here.
Netherfriends will take over the Empty Bottle Feb. 10 for a Middle America release party. Tickets for the show, also featuring Chicago’s own Secret Colours, are $8.
