HOLIDAY SALE AT THE ONION STORE

Newswire Jeff Tweedy covers the Black Eyed Peas, hilarity ensues

"Whatchoo gonna do with all that junk?"

Last night’s @MayorEmanuel festivities at The Hideout in Chicago were full of surprises. First, the actual Mayor Rahm Emanuel—not to be confused with Dan Sinker’s Twitter phenom @MayorEmanuel, a fictional, cuss-filled uber-being with a penchant for adventure and a duck named Quaxelrod for a best friend—stopped by to glad-hand attendees. Then, following some readings and general frivolity, Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy took the mic for some Black Eyed Peas covers.

Why Black Eyed Peas covers? Well, way back when on Twitter—and this can get a little confusing, so let’s just say things may become slightly clearer if you spend a few hours on the @MayorEmanuel page—anyway, way back when, alternate-universe @MayorEmanuel had booked Tweedy for a benefit. Then he got a little pissy when the Wilco frontman refused to play some BEP songs. “What the fuck?” he wrote. “People love that shit.”

Fast-forward to last night, when Tweedy performed a kind of slam-poetry version of “My Humps” and a hilariously overwrought version of “I Gotta Feeling.” The latter is a must-watch performance, if only for Tweedy’s poignant commentary on just how many lyrics Fergie and company cram into every song.

Update: Sinker posted a third video – this one's of Tweedy covering "Rock That Body" and was taken by Elizabeth Riley, an audience member.
