Jim DeRogatis leaving the Chicago Sun-Times
The daily's loss is Chicago Public Radio's gain
Jim DeRogatis, left, with Sound Opinions co-host Greg Kot.
Media blogger Robert Feder is reporting that famed Chicago Sun-Times music critic (and Sound Opinions co-host) Jim DeRogatis has resigned his position at the newspaper, a job he's held for 18 years.
The Roger Ebert to Greg Kot of the Tribune's Gene Siskel, DeRogatis is leaving to be a full-time professor at Columbia College and blog for Chicago Public Radio's Vocalo.org, where Feder also works. Vocalo is turning into a veritable Sun-Times alumni club, with Feder, architecture critic Lee Bey, food reporter Steve Dolinsky, and writer Amy Krouse Rosenthal all on staff.
DeRo, who also plays in punk outfit Vortis, will remain co-host of Sound Opinions. His blog, "PopNStuff," debuts June 1 and will cover the usual stuff with “special emphasis on the incredibly vibrant Chicago music scene,” according to DeRogatis. He and Kot have a joint book coming out this fall, The Beatles Vs. The Rolling Stones: Sound Opinions On The Great Rock ’N’ Roll Rivalry.
