Joan Of Arc probably not playing Owls songs at The Hideout Feb. 6

Seriously, try and find a decent picture of this band online.

In an interview with Creative Loafing, Bobby Burg (bassist for Joan Of Arc, also known for work in local acts like Love Of Everything, Make Believe, and Vacations) revealed that Joan Of Arc is planning to incorporate four songs written by its former band, Owls, into its set during its current tour. This is great news for Owls fans in NYC, Pittsburgh, and Ybor City, Florida, but what about those in Chicago who want to hear Victor V. shred through “Everyone Is My Friend?”

Owls was made up of members of Cap’n Jazz (Tim and Mike Kinsella) and Ghosts And Vodka (Victor Villareal and Sam Zurick). The band released a self-titled LP on Jade Tree Records in 2001, contributed a track to Thick Records’ Oil comp, and promptly broke up. Many fans regard the Owls LP as one of the standout releases to have came out of the Chicago subscene that orbits around the Kinsella family and Joan Of Arc.

Tim Kinsella, the only permanent member of Joan Of Arc, is working with Chicago’s premier “anti-cellist” Fred Lonberg-Holm to present a performance of the Joan Of Arc Lightbox Orchestra. Lonberg-Holm will direct an improvised set by Joan Of Arc members through the use of a lightbox, which “contains a light bulb for each musician which Lonberg-Holm switches on or off to suggest when they should play.” The show, which admittedly sounds pretty interesting, is going down Feb. 6 at The Hideout, shortly after Joan Of Arc returns from its tour.

This particular show seems a little too high-concept for an impromptu Owls set to go down, and Chicago will probably eventually see these songs played live, but what’s with the holdout? Perhaps in preparation for a full-fledged reunion show? Only time will tell.
