Matt “Romeo Dance Cheetah” Cornelison on the art of air guitar
The local U.S. Air Guitar Hall Of Fam member doles out some tips of the trade
Matt "Romeo Dance Cheetah" Cornelison
Air guitar has long been a wonderful refuge for folks who never bothered to pick up a six-string, but who always wanted to be rock stars. Fortunately for locals who are into that imaginary instrument, the U.S. Air Guitar National Finals will take place at Metro on July 23. But anyone who wants a chance to perform in the competition must first qualify in a regional competition.
Chicago’s regional goes down May 12 at the Double Door, which doesn’t give prospective competitors a lot of time to prepare. To help out, The A.V. Club paid a visit to local U.S. Air Guitar Championships Hall Of Fame member and last year’s national champion, Matt “Romeo Dance Cheetah” Cornelison (who will perform during the regional competition’s half-time show with his band, The Flavor Savers, and a dance group called We Stand Sideways). Cornelison discussed his life as an air guitarist, what participants should expect during the upcoming competition, and three tips to slaying with an invisible ax.
