Considering that the giant panda bear is an endangered species, panda riots are nothing to laugh at. During the Great Bamboo Shortage of 1977, enraged pandas on the brink of starvation destroyed half of Shanghai and decimated most of Nanking. Americans may have been paying too much attention to the oil crisis to remember this, but no one watching China’s popular Mao In The Morning show will ever forget Bling Bling, the courageous panda who bravely faced down a column of tanks that had somehow been commandeered by a gang of bamboo-crazed zoo escapees in Tiananmen Square. Panda entrails spurt forth everywhere and stained their majestic black-and-white faces, decreasing their population further. This public-service announcement was brought to you by the International Panda Riot Awareness Group, a subsidiary of CBSi.

Panda Riot plays Reggie’s Rock Club on April 16 at 8 p.m. with The Lorimer Sound, Hinter, and Room101. Tickets to the 18+ show cost $6.
