Notice Recordings
Welcome to Tapes ‘n’ Tapes, a bimonthly video series focusing on local cassette labels to help get the feel for why some people have turned to tapes for their musical medium.
On December 1, 2009, Travis Bird and Evan Lindorff-Ellery welcomed Notice Recordings to the world with a cryptic blog post entitled: “Record buying public—rationalizing.” It ends with, “Who will fold first, me or them?” Seven days later, they announced Notice’s first two cassette releases: one from the pair’s experimental project, Dense Reduction, the other a solo endeavor from Lindorff-Ellery. Since then, the duo has released more than a dozen experimental cassettes from the likes of Jon Mueller, The North Sea, and Red Electric Rainbow.
The A.V. Club went to meet Bird and Lindorff-Ellery at their Ravenswood apartment and Notice’s base of action to discuss how cassettes are mini-canvases, the idea behind their label name, and what the future of music means for beer bottles. (And we learn a little Italian from a mysterious guest in the process.)
