News Net Now the second-place city sticker designer is afraid of the public

Since sifting through dull newspapers, hyperbolic blogs, and overflowing RSS feeds for meaningful news can be an arduous process, News Net catches and compiles both the amusing and the significant reports that were overlooked throughout the weekend. Here are some things to think about as the workweek begins.

• The city vehicle sticker crisis of 2012 continues. Over the weekend, the runner-up’s parents asked that the girl’s design not be used because of “unwanted media and public scrutiny and criticism of her artwork.”

• While everyone and their grandmothers has pretty much had enough of “shit people say” videos, there could be worse things to do for seven and half minutes than watch this “Shit REAL Chicagoans Said” compilation. The video is loaded with gems from Mayor Daley, the Blues Brothers, Oprah, employees at Wiener Circle, and a classically awful commercial from Moo & Oink.

• Can anyone in Illinois actually name all seven judges on the Illinois Supreme Court? One of the Cook County seats will be on this year’s ballot. Get acquainted with the choices with some help from WBEZ.

• Looking for a romantic and philanthropic way to spend Valentine’s Day? Mosey on over to the em.body.peace art exhibit in Northcenter. Nothing stirs up lustful feelings like a collection of nude drawings and paintings. Plus, all sales will raise money for a Ceasefire mural. Wine and food will also be present.

• Around $500,000 worth of jewelry was lifted from a Lincoln Park jeweler last week in what will eventually be adapted into an intricately plotted and grossly exaggerated Hollywood flop.

• The Sun-Times has some suggestions for heavy brews that will warm you up in this frigid 40 degree Chicago winter weather.

• A Chicago police captain is suing a fellow officer for allegedly defamatory comments that were posted on Facebook.

• A supposed portrait of Baberaham—sorry—Mary Todd Lincoln that has hung in the governor’s mansion for 32 years has been deemed a fraud. On a happier note, it’s time to celebrate Honest Abe’s birthday once again. Wish the Great Emancipator a happy birthday with this amazing slideshow, depicting Abe in many hilarious and disturbing lights.

• The trial for seven members of a Midwest militia kicked off Monday. The quaint group is charged with plotting to overthrow the government, but some of the group’s attorneys will argue the militia were merely preparing for survival in case of domestic chaos or an attack on the United States. Apparently they did this by acquiring large amounts of machine guns, unregistered rifles, ammunition and parts for improvised explosive devices, none of which is all that subtle.
