Over The Rhine takes a lot from its namesake, a historic district of its Cincinnati hometown that has seen its architectural gems neglected over the years. The name adds a bittersweet quality to the history of a band that has put out album after album to critical acclaim while its contemporaries, like Sarah McLachlan and Aimee Mann, receive more fanfare. Perhaps this will change with the band’s announcement of a fall tour for The Long Surrender, the album it released earlier this year—20 years after the band’s debut. Husband-and-wife duo Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist embarked on their first collaboration with producer Joe Henry for the latest album.

Henry has produced albums for legends like Elvis Costello and Loudon Wainwright III that are, “dark and cinematic and funky and unpredictable,” according to Detweiler. He says, “It seems like he loves to help performers who have already covered a lot of miles rediscover the soul of what they do in a new light.” Over The Rhine will play its penultimate show at the Old Town School Of Folk Music in Chicago. And the last stop? Well, at the beginning, of course, in Cincinnati.
