Tapes ’n’ Tapes Permanent Records

This cat gives Maru a run for its money.

Welcome to Tapes ’n’ Tapes, a bimonthly video series focusing on local cassette labels to help get the feel for why some people have turned to tapes for their musical medium.

When Lance Barresi and Liz Tooley moved to Chicago in August 2006, they began to set up a little shop in the Ukrainian Village. A couple months later, they opened a record store called Permanent Records, and it’s since become one of the most beloved landmarks for local music lovers. In 2007, they began releasing music under the same moniker, and in 2009 they dropped their first cassette release. So far, they’ve release eight cassettes, mostly by local acts like noiseniks Cacaw and garage-poppers Brain Idea.

The A.V. Club swung by the Permanent home base to talk with Barresi about the medium’s nostalgia, the appeal of tape hiss, and the PBR-to-cassette conversion rate.
