Ringing Endorsement: 826CHI
Oak Park is the place to see movies

Welcome to Ringing Endorsement, wherein The A.V. Club speaks to local people of note to get their hearty recommendation of an event, restaurant, or whatever strikes their fancy. This week, non-profit writing and after-school tutoring center 826CHI’s Outreach Coordinator Patrick Shaffner sings the praises of Classic Cinemas Lake Theater in Oak Park to be treated like movie-going royalty.
It’s one of those theaters where the folks who work there seem to care about you as a movie patron for the evening. You really get the Hollywood-star treatment. And you go in there, and it’s just gorgeous. [There are] statues inside the theater! Statues of some Greek mythological woman of some sort…the Greek god of watching movies? The outside has a ’50s vibe, and then the inside feels like ’20s and ’30s. They’re Art Deco, I think.
You haven’t seen [WALL·E unless] you’ve seen it here. Also, economic warning: Free refills on all sizes. It’s the standard fare but the popcorn is quite delicious. There’s nothing out of the ordinary on the food side, but they do it right. They don’t burn the popcorn.
Lake Theater is located at 1022 Lake St. For showtimes and more information, visit oprf.com/Lake/. 826CHI is located at 1331 N. Milwaukee Ave. For more information on the writing center and how to volunteer to become a tutor, visit 826chi.org.
