Screw Asian carp. It’s zebra mussel time.

Watch your backs, assholes.
Since sifting through dull newspapers, hyperbolic blogs, and overflowing RSS feeds for meaningful news can be an arduous process, News Net catches and compiles both the amusing and the significant reports that were overlooked throughout the week. Here are some things to think about as the workweek winds down.
* Screw Asian carp. Everyone needs to get really worked up about zebra mussels again. The Associated Press ran an article this week claiming the mussels have already dramatically changed Lake Michigan’s biodiversity, saying, “Some types of microscopic plants have declined more than 80 percent with the mussel’s arrival.” The mussels, which get into the lakes after clinging to the hulls of European shipping vessels, have long been a problem in the region. Unfortunately, they’re horrible eating as well.
* Slice, a national pizza blog, is not really that into raw pizza. That revelation came this week after its visit to Raw, in the Chicago French Market. Naturally, the bloggers object to classifying cashew butter as cheese, but even more, they weren’t into the other ingredients: “sprouted wheat berries, hazelnuts, tomatoes, flax seed, jalapeños, lemon, garlic, salt, extra virgin olive oil, nutritional yeast, agave, olives, and onion.” Can’t imagine why.
* Jackass’ Johnny Knoxville threw out the first pitch at Tuesday’s White Sox vs. Red Sox game at the Cell. He didn’t stick around for the game, though. He had to leave post-pitch for an appearance in glamorous Naperville.
* Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump is one of a slate of artists who have covered One Tree Hill’s theme song this season, which may be the show’s last. Tegan And Sara and Aimee Mann have recorded versions of the song as well.
* Even though their team got knocked out of playoff contention, at least the Chicago Fire’s fans were enjoying themselves this past weekend at the game vs. the Seattle Sounders. The Sounders are heavily sponsored by Microsoft, prompting the Fire’s “Section 8” fan group to come up with a pretty neat-looking, old-school, Nintendo-themed interactive banner. Definitely watch the video below.
* After being apparently held up by the arduous city permit process, Avec is back on its rebuilding track after this summer’s horrible fire. Start saving pennies now, foodies.
* The Chicago Partners for Sacred Places handed down its Preservation Excellence awards this week. The entire list is pretty amazing and would make an incredible Sunday driving tour, but Vocalo was especially impressed by the inside of 1444 N. Astor, an art deco remodel that is pretty incredible.
