Just Announced The Decemberists add July show at the Aragon

There’s something that sounds awfully familiar about The Decemberists’ most recent album, The King Is Dead. Sure, it’s the sound of the band returning to the tunefulness of early releases like Castaways And Cutouts and Her Majesty, but the album’s licks and melodies also recall everything from The Rolling Stones and R.E.M. to New Order and The Smiths. The record will feel mighty familiar around these parts come July, when The Decemberists play their second concert in Chicago in 2011 at the Aragon Ballroom on July 25. That familiarity shouldn’t be seen as a point of derision for the band or the record, for The King Is Dead is a nod toward the music that shaped the tastes of the band members and their fans alike. There’s currently a presale on for the show, so jump on that if you missed out the first time around.

This means that our prediction of a likely appearance at this year's Lollapalooza was off, but that's okay. We can still kick back and get reacquainted with “This Is Why We Fight,” The King Is Dead’s stormy Smiths riff, now presented in the fresh context of a post-apocalyptic music video.
