Tapes ’n’ Tapes Volume 17: Ciard/Impala

No related

Welcome to Tapes ’n’ Tapes, a bimonthly video series focusing on local cassette labels to help get the feel for why some people have turned to tapes for their musical medium.

Dave Mata and Geoff Carr had been involved in the local music scene for years before they set up a gallery, performance venue, and workspace called Impala Gallery nearly two years ago. They’ve since released music from folks who regularly practice and record in the space under the Ciard/Impala banner. The releases include tapes by the likes of Carr’s freak-out indie-rock duo Meah!, and Mata and Carr’s experimental noise project, Sungun.

The A.V. Club trekked up to the Rogers Park venue to speak with Mata and Carr about the appeal of an object in the digital age, why they like hand-touched music, and how running a tape label is kind of like having a DJ night.
