Weekend Agenda: Aug. 28-30
Nine Inch Nails
The best of this weekend:
FRIDAY
For being consistently funny throughout his tenure on Saturday Night Live, The Critic, and The Simpsons, Jon Lovitz never gets enough work. Some call it a travesty, but most people don't notice. For those of us who miss him, he'll be at the Improv in Schaumburg. We can all reminisce about how the misunderstood High School High was actually pretty funny. This weekend marks the last time Chicago will be seeing Nine Inch Nails live as they stop through on their "Wave Goodbye" tour tonight and tomorrow night. Here's a clip from the now 20-year-old Pretty Hate Machine, "Something I Can Never Have":
The First Midwest Amphitheatre turns into a Top 40 radio station tonight: Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, Soulja Boy, and Drake will all be there, pumping out hit after hit. If you're rather among the city's dancing-declined, check out Portage Theater for two Joss Whedon screenings: the film Serenity and the short musical Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog. Speaking of horrible, The Music Box has that covered. It's once again screening the Tommy Wiseau "so bad it's good" film The Room at midnight. Haven't heard about it? We've got your fix. Those looking for something a little, um, better will appreciate this trailer for Dr. Horrible:
For a confusing world with dixieland instruments and dry humor, check out the Chicago theatrical premiere of the Swedish absurdist film You, The Living at Facets. The House Of Blues hosts Motörhead and Reverend Horton Heat. And in case you missed them at Pitchfork Festival, the Vivian Girls are playing two shows. The first is an acoustic, all-ages free set at Permanent Records with Black Math. Their late show is at the Empty Bottle with The Beets and Daylight Robbery. Here are the Girls with an acoustic rendition of "When I'm Gone":
