Contest Win tickets to Black Joe Lewis And The Honeybears or Smoking Popes

The Smoking Popes

The A.V. Club and Double Door are giving away tickets for two shows this week. On Saturday, April 2, it’s going to be a party when Black Joe Lewis And The Honeybears perform with Those Darlins and DJRC. On Sunday, April 3, Chicago pop-punk favorites the Smoking Popes will perform in celebration of their newest album, This Is Only A Test. To win, interested parties should send an e-mail over to ochicago@theonion.com with either “Black Joe Lewis” or “Smoking Popes” in the subject line. Winners will be drawn a day or two prior to the show.

Not many musicians are able to nail the urgent style of soul and funk that came from legends like James Brown and Sly Stone as well as Black Joe Lewis And The Honeybears. As timeless as its sound is, the band has only been active since 2007. The band’s 2009 debut album, Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is!, stands up to the masterpieces of ’60s funk and soul and fits in seamlessly within a genre that hasn’t been matched in nearly 40 years.

Since 1991, The Smoking Popes have been one of Chicago’s favorite local bands. In 2005, the band reunited following a six-year hiatus due to lead singer Josh Carterer’s conversion to Christianity. Since that reunion, they have released three albums, 2008’s Stay Down, 2010’s It's Been A Long Day, and this year’s This Is Only A Test.
