The A.V. Club has a pair of tickets for two far out shows at Metro. On Dec. 3, turntablist-turned-instrumentalist RJD2 will be performing. There are some people in this world who have tried so hard to bring the world of Nintendo into reality. Five members of that crowd happen to be the members of Chicago’s “chiptune” band, I Fight Dragons. They combine pop-rock with jams derived from Super Mario Bros., Final Fantasy, Zelda, Castlevania, and Mega Man. It’s difficult not to feel like a happy little kid armed with a Gameboy when the nostalgic tune of Super Mario Bros. plays subtly behind pop-rock. I Fight Dragons are concrete evidence that proves countless hours of living in a virtual world doesn’t always go to waste.

RJD2 is Eugene, Oregon’s John Krohn, who is one of the most well known names in the underground hip-hop world. RJD2’s heavily instrumental, soulful, moody, DJ Shadow-influenced patched up hip-hop style landed Krohn deals with El-P’s co-founded label, Definitive Jux, on which he released his highly acclaimed solo debut, Deadringer. Collaborations with other artists on the label, such as MURS, Cannibal Ox, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Mr. Lif, and The Perceptionists soon followed. He then joined XL Recordings, label of British big shots like M.I.A., Damon Albarn, and Radiohead. In 2009, he established his own label, RJ’s Electrical Connections. In January, RJD2 dropped The Colossal, the first release on his new label.
