Win tickets to Magic Kids or The Helio Sequence
Magic Kids
The A.V. Club has free tickets for two upcoming shows. On Jan. 12, Magic Kids perform with Generationals, Pet Lions, and In Tall Buildings at Schubas. On the same night, The Helio Sequence will play along with Sun Airway, Houses, and California Wives at Lincoln Hall. Both shows are the opening night of Tomorrow Never Knows 2011, an annual winter music festival showcasing many under the radar acts. To win, send an email to ochicago@theonion.com with “Magic Kids” or “The Helio Sequence” in the subject line. Oh, and unless you’re old enough to purchase nudie magazines you won’t be allowed in. Both shows are 18+.
With the song “Summer,” which has a pop sound eerily similar to the Beach Boys—as does the rest of their debut LP, Memphis—Magic Kids will transport listeners to the season for which the tune was named. Recognizing that the dead of Chicago’s winter is barely upon us, going to this show will probably be good for your mental health.
While on tour in 2004, it seemed like the end for The Helio Sequence, as singer/guitarist Brandon Summers shredded his vocal chords. Summers, who was resolute on singing again, would begin a strict exercise routine, reunite with drummer Benjamin Weikel, and release the epic indie-pop LP, Keep Your Eyes Ahead, in 2008. Ultimately, it shows what one can do with a little determination. So get off that ass and make something of yourself. But first, go to this show.
