A decade ago, DeVotchka was the pit orchestra for a touring burlesque troupe. When the group began playing and releasing its own music, listeners were captivated by the gang of underdogs’ graceful fusion of dreamy European-Gypsy indie-pop. The Denver quartet gained word-of-mouth recognition in the indie scene, and then reached the ears of a broader audience by being featured in the trailer for Everything Is Illuminated and earning a Grammy nomination in 2006 for the Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack. The band’s romantic and eerie compositions often include a Theremin, violin, accordion, upright bass, trumpet, bouzouki, percussion, and sousaphone.
