Chicago’s Hot Mix 5 formed back in the ’80s, and the crew quickly established itself on the city’s radio scene with its mix shows. The band helped usher in an era of house music. In fact, Hot Mix 5 has been so influential to the Chicago music community that the city gave the act its own street, “Hot Mix 5 Way,” off Michigan Avenue.
Primus also formed in the ’80s, but this band formed in San Francisco, and continues to dish out its funk-rock blend. Primus’ eclectic sound has changed over the years with the comings and goings of new band members, though frontman Les Claypool has remained a constant presence.
