JC Brooks And The Uptown Sound
The A.V. Club has tickets to give away to some lucky readers for two upcoming shows at the Double Door. Friday March 18, JC Brooks And The Uptown Sound are going to funk shit up along with Soul Summit DJs Dave Mata, Duke Grip, and Sloppy White. Wednesday March 23, British quintet Chapel Club will be performing with Blah Blah Blah and Hey Leroy. To win, interested parties should send an e-mail over to ochicago@theonion.com and include either “JC Brooks” or “Chapel Club” in the subject line. Winners will be drawn a day or two prior to the show.
Where there is JC Brooks And The Uptown Sound, there is a funky party. A true Chicago band, JC Brooks And The Uptown Sound formed in 2007 in—shock—Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. Influenced by funk greats Otis Redding, James Brown, and Curtis Mayfield, JC Brooks And The Uptown Sound knows soul music. In 2009, the band released its first studio album, Beat Of Our Own Drum, and in 2010, it released a two-song EP that features a cover of Wilco’s “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart.” Known to put on a hell of a show, JC Brooks And The Uptown Sound’s live performances can put anyone in a better mood.
With the January release of its debut album, Palace, British quintet Chapel Club is just beginning to emerge from the land of tea time and Monty Python. Since the band’s formation in 2008, it was listed as one of the most exciting new prospects for 2010 on NME list, performed at Glastonbury and on “Later With Jools Holland,” which pretty much means that Chapel Club has found themselves a place in the UK’s lively entertainment sphere.
