Contest Win tickets to see Jolie Holland or The Ladybug Transistor

Scott Irvine

This week, The A.V. Club is offering you the chance to see Jolie Holland or The Ladybug Transistor for free. Jolie Holland will be playing her beautiful, bluesy mix of rock, folk, and country July 12 at Lincoln Hall. The Ladybug Transistor takes the stage July 10 at Schubas. If you would like tickets to either show, e-mail ochicago@theonion.com with your name and the name of the band you would like to see in the subject line for a chance to win.

Jolie Holland’s fourth studio album, Pint Of Blood, was just released on June 28, and it shows her embracing “the live-studio rock approach of the ’60s and ’70s.” Though the album was inspired by Neil Young’s Zuma, with hints of sounds by Velvet Underground, David Bowie, and the Rolling Stones, Holland still manages to make the work all her own. She brings a startling power and vision to songs such as “Yellow And Gold,” “Remember,” and the sultry “All Those Girls.”

The Brooklyn transplants that make up The Ladybug Transistor are Australian by birth. They have been kicking around since the ’90s, when they released their debut album, Marlborough Farms. The band spent the next 10 years honing its sound on a trilogy of albums before releasing its most recent LP, Can’t Wait Another Day, in 2007. The band brings its sweet version of classic alt-pop, featured on such songs as “Always On The Telephone,” to Schubas.
