Contest Win tickets to see Perfume Genius at Schubas Oct. 5

Matador Records newbie Perfume Genius is stopping by Schubas, with Sebastian Blanck and Mazes in tow, on Oct. 5. A.V. Club readers can win two passes to the show by simply sending an e-mail with the word “perfume” in the subject line to ochicago@theonion.com.

Perfume Genius is the stage name of Mike Hadreas, a 26-year-old who began using music as a means of therapy and release following a retreat from a life of crime and drug abuse. Hadreas moved into his mother’s country home at an especially low point in his life and found an emotional outlet in writing and recording the delicate piano-based ballads featured on his debut album, Learning. Live Perfume Genius shows feature Hadreas backed up by a synth-player, creating a carefully layered atmosphere that showcases his wafer-thin voice and introspective lyrics. Fans of Sufjan Stevens and Elliott Smith are sure to find solace in the nooks and crannies of Perfume Genius’ lo-fi honesty.
