Contest Win tickets to see Revolver or The Ex

The Ex

The A.V. Club has tickets to give away to some lucky readers for two upcoming shows this month. On Saturday, March 5, the chamber-pop Frenchmen of Revolver will be performing at Schubas with Belle Brigade. On Tuesday, March 8, the most punk-rock Dutch middle-agers around, The Ex, will be performing at Lincoln Hall along with Follows, Ken Vandermark, and Zerfu Demissie. To win, interested parties should e-mail ochicago@theonion.com with either “Revolver” or “The Ex” in the subject line. Winners will be drawn a day or two prior to each show.

Revolver is a Parisian, chamber-pop—or as the band would say, “pop de chamber”—trio of classically trained musicians. The boys knew very little about any genre outside of classical music, but when introduced to the infamous Beatles album Revolver, that all changed. The trio’s sound is ambiguous—unifying the classic pop of Simon & Garfunkel and The Beach Boys with Romantic and Baroque icons Chopin and Purcell.

Dutch anarcho-punks The Ex have been bringing the noise for nearly 30 years, dropping over 25 full-length punk albums. The Ex’s take on punk was never confined within the genre’s narrow conventions, but branches out under the influence of Eastern European and African styles. The Ex stays busy involving themselves with numerous collaborations, notably with Tortoise and Sonic Youth, but still found time to drop this year’s Catch My Shoe. Despite the departure of founding member and vocalist G.W. Sok, The Ex continues to do what it does best—move forward.
