Win tickets to see The Dear Hunter or Viva Brother
The Dear Hunter
The A.V. Club is giving away a set of tickets to see either The Dear Hunter or Viva Brother. The Dear Hunter will be playing with Kay Kay And His Weathered Underground, O’Brother, and The Felix Culpa July 24 at Lincoln Hall. Viva Brother (formerly just Brother) will be playing with Kitten July 23 at Schubas Tavern. Anyone interested should send an e-mail to ochicago@theonion.com with the preferred act in the subject line to win.
Hailing from Providence, Rhode Island, The Dear Hunter began as the side project of Casey Crescenzo, a former multi-instrumentalist with The Receiving End Of Sirens. Still playing several different instruments, Crescenzo now spends his time writing expansive concept records with The Dear Hunter, whose catalogue includes a three-part series of albums and a current project called The Color Spectrum, a series of nine EPs—one for each of the basic colors. The songs, which are not actually about colors, would be kindred to fans of bands like Thrice, Manchester Orchestra, and Brand New.
Viva Brother has released one album, entitled Famous First Words. The English rock act calls its genre “gritpop,” which could be described as an edgier version of the type of music that spawned Oasis and Blur, and the group has garnered comparisons to the former. Viva Brother’s songs, accordingly to vocalist Lee Newell, are about “leaving people, songs about getting out from where you live, songs about being in an altered state.” Given the statement, Viva Brother can be counted on for interesting subject matter, as the band called its hometown of Slough, U.K. “a burg devoted mostly to office work and drug dealing.”
