The A.V. Club has passes to give away to three different events that may appeal to the nerd, dweeb, geek, loser, and misfit in all of us, spanning the many colors of the goober rainbow. For those quiet skinny dudes with minimalist apartment setups (normally two chairs, a table, an overstocked bookshelf, a turntable, and a vintage Neu! poster), we’ve got passes to see experimental music gods The Legendary Pink Dots at Double Door on Oct. 22. Cosplay fanatics can finally seize the chance to bond with their metalhead older brother with passes to GWAR at the House of Blues on Oct. 26. Finally, for the video game nerd, there is a pair of tickets available to Video Games Live: Bonus Round at the Chicago Theatre on Nov. 6.
To enter to win these passes, simply send an email to ochicago@theonion.com. If you’re looking to win Pink Dots tickets, put “Dots” in the subject line; for Gwar, write “Gwar” in the subject line; and for Video Games Live passes, put “Bonus Round” in the subject line.
Shrouded in gothic mystery, The Legendary Pink Dots have occupied a dark, ominous position in the realm of experimental music since 1980. The Dots have undergone their share of lineup changes, but the core of vocalist-songwriter-keyboardist Edward Ka-Spel and keyboardist Phil Knight have withstood the test of time. Along with claiming responsibility for the number of the Beast’s shift from 666 to 834 (it’s a long story), the Dots have released over 40 albums and amassed a dedicated fan base. The Dots are taking their bizarre, storied history on the road for their 30th Anniversary Tour.
The easiest way to get a taste of a post-apocalypse world would probably be to stand among an audience that has just been showered in fluids at a Gwar show. Gwar’s mediocre thrash-metal music is accompanied by some seriously intense Halloween costumes, an unnecessarily complex mythology, fire-dancing rituals, and mock executions with flying shredded rubber limbs, all of which result in Broadway-caliber performances. Gwar’s 25-year career made its mark on the Billboard Top 200 last year with its anniversary album, Lust In Space, debuting at number 96. Gwar’s eternal gladiatorial horror show is back to impress macabre-loving geeks everywhere.
