Art Brut and Surfer Blood at Lincoln Hall
Art Brut frontman Eddie Argos came up spitting acidic observations like a post-punk Ray Davies, baiting hipsters with lines such as “I can’t stand the sound of The Velvet Underground” while the band behind him sloshed and slammed between The Libertines and Arctic Monkeys. It made for a thrill, to be sure, but Art Brut is also haunted by the sense that a band as inspiringly brash and snotty is almost fated to burn bright and dim fast. Will it work out that way? It remains to be seen, though the band has developed since the start, first with 2007’s It’s A Bit Complicated and now with Art Brut Vs. Satan, a 2009 album produced by no less than Frank Black.
