The Ataris seemed destined for crossover success from day one. The band’s heart-on-sleeve pop-punk built it a massive following in the indie world, so a jump to a big label and subsequent fame seemed predestined. Turns out it wasn’t: The Ataris’ 2003 major-label debut, So Long Astoria, went over well with fans, but failed to convert many in the mainstream, and within a year, only frontman Kristopher Roe and guitarist John Collura remained. The duo followed up with 2007’s self-released Welcome The Night, which as the title suggests, was a much darker, more aggressive turn for the band. Collura has since departed, and the forthcoming The Graveyard Of The Atlantic is currently in label limbo with no release date. When it does surface, expect a stylistic return to the band’s poppier beginnings.
