Attack Attack!, I Set My Friends On Fire, Miss May I, Our Last Night, and The Color Morale at Mojoes Rock House

The most common criticism levied at “metalcore,” even from fervent fans, is that it’s too formulaic—a by-numbers mix of guttural thrash, vocals that go from soaring emo tremble to raspy scream to super-scary demon in the same verse, and way too many breakdowns. Ohio’s Miss May I is the newest recruit to Rise Records, home to most of those generically aggro bands—and judging by its debut, Apologies Are For The Weak, it’s content with merely being part of the pack. Double-bass blast beats, down-tuned chugging, and throat-rending growls dominate every song with nary a sonic left turn.
