Avi Buffalo and Blitzen Trapper at Lincoln Hall

On Avi Buffalo’s heart-melting 2010 self-titled debut, teenaged singer-songwriter Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg sorts through a typical mish-mash of young-man emotions—joy, frustration, fear, and horniness—with uncommon clarity. Musically, Avi Buffalo is indebted to the starry-eyed guitar pop of Built To Spill and The Shins, which practically qualifies as classic rock for them. Headliner Blitzen Trapper has recently veered away from its once-quirky pop toward blatantly aping the stalwarts of classic American rock ’n’ roll—most obviously The Band and Neil Young. On 2008’s Furr, Blitzen Trapper cranked out facsimiles of legitimately great tunes, but on the new Destroyers Of The Void, the hollowness of singer-songwriter Eric Earley’s work finally catches up with him. Unfortunately, imitating legends doesn’t make you one.
