The Black Keys have been unfortunately saddled with frequent comparisons to that other two-piece garage band with a similar sounding name, despite boundary pushing efforts like working with producer Danger Mouse. The Keys revisit much of their own catalogue with the new record, Brothers, opening up their already established blues-rock to weirder, cheerier transgressions, successfully redefining what “classic” Black Keys can really be. Berkeley indie-pop group The Morning Benders turned heads on 2008’s Talking Through Tin Cans with ’60s pop melodies and restless sloppiness that were refreshingly sweet. The band’s newest, Big Echo, sees the quartet diving into more experimental production courtesy of co-producer Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear, while retaining the old-school pop songwriting that made its debut such a charmer.
