Silkworm drummer Michael Dahlquist died in a car crash in 2005, and the Chicago band’s remaining members, Andy Cohen and Tim Midgett, returned with a searing ache on Hammer Of The Gods, the 2007 debut from their new band, Bottomless Pit. They’ve kept some of Silkworm’s stark guitar crunch and sympathetic-yet-pathological songwriting, but here it’s almost better for nursing wounds than for rocking. Still, those patient washes of distorted guitars are plenty satisfying on last year's Congress EP.
