Brilliant Pebbles was an anti-missile program conceived during the Reagan administration as an attempt to deploy 4,000 satellite-based, watermelon-sized projectiles to bat warheads out of the sky; concept drawings of the system looked like giant mirrors blissfully floating high above the earth’s surface. That also describes the kooky spirit of local quartet Brilliant Pebbles: Songs like “Chinese Muscles” turn six-minute running times into full-fledged space operas that sound as though they’ve been extracted from a bygone era, joyfully mashing fuzzed-out bass with church organs while frontman Monika Bukowska caterwauls in what may or may not be English. While BP joyfully lobs every sonic oddity it can muster against a wall, an unnerving number of them stick. See for yourself at this record-release show at Subterranean.
