None Casablanca at Block Cinema - Northwestern University
Michael Curtiz’s masterpiece rumination on love versus virtue, Casablanca has lodged itself at or near the top of all respected greatest-American-film lists with its perfect blend of drama, comedy, and intrigue. Filled with well-intentioned characters pulled by competing motivations, the movie’s primary theme is sacrifice. Casablanca, which won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director, was also Humphrey Bogart’s first romantic role, giving him wider appeal outside of gangster-film parts and making him a bona fide star. The flick is also packed full of crazy-famous lines: “Here’s looking at you, kid,” “Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship,” and “Of all the gin joints in the world, she had to walk into mine.”
