Subjective as it is, comedy still often proves to be a fundamental element of why people get up every day. People love to laugh, period, even though sometimes they might laugh at some base shit. Chicago Underground Comedy, by contrast, hates what clubs put on sale for public consumption. Its organizers got to thinking, “If people will pay for acts that aren’t funny, then they’ll definitely pay for acts that are funny.” What’s the point in hiring the third lead on a CBS sitcom to get audiences going when you can hire an up-and-coming outcast with an ax to grind? At the core of every great comedian is an angry quirkiness, and it’s always best to catch up-and-comers before any uniqueness and personality has been beaten out of them by the stand-up grind.
