CIMM: Died Young, Stayed Pretty at Claudia Cassidy Theater at Chicago Cultural Center
Canadian filmmaker Eileen Yaghoobian's ambitious documentary Died Young, Stayed Pretty is soaked in the beery, living-on-the-edges world of workaday rock 'n' roll, spanning several decades in an attempt to encapsulate the dynamic, ephemeral art of the live show poster. It's an ancillary, often-overlooked craft, in which talented visual artists pour their often-substantial creative gifts into advertising a one-time event that may be forgotten almost as soon as it happens. The film is a pleasure to listen to, featuring a jumping soundtrack of stellar undergound artists. But despite the undeniable talent of the postermakers, Died Young is curiously static; with such a vast body of work on display, you don't really get a sense of any of it: It's just a towering mass of material that flits past in the blink of an eye.
