Classy D and The Reckoning at iO Theater (Del Close)
Improv-troupe names are always something of a misnomer, but in The Reckoning's case, it at least suggests the troupe's sweeping importance with a hushed silence: Not an ideal group to see for the average improv-newbie drunk wandering in off the street from Clark on a whim, but, in the least pretentious way possible, perfect for someone who's grown weary of the standard Harold. The long-running troupe's personnel is sizable at nine people, and though there isn't a single slouch, Pat O'Brien is frequently a stand-out crowd favorite. (His jump to Second City's MainStage from directing their touring companies in 2008 all but confirms this.) Sure, it's hard to nail down what to expect in an improv show, but only The Reckoning can routinely accomplish this unpredictability twice a week and have it feel so refreshing.
