Don Hertzfeldt at Music Box Theatre
Don Hertzfeldt gets “it” no matter what “it” is. Give the animator an existential component of humanity, and he’s got the visualization. Watch any of his short films and behold everyday moments that we all experience but falsely view as singular. He draws both tragedy and comedy from the childhood fears evident in his 1998 film Billy’s Balloon. There is no sap who hasn’t felt the peril of a blind date as documented in 1997’s Lily And Jim. All of these 3D situations unravel in 2D form. Hertzfeldt’s characters are drawn simply so that his big ideas aren’t ignored. Though he goes around the country showcasing his films and offering some introspection, one can only wonder what is inside his brain that he hasn’t already perfected on screen.
