Dr. Dog is a strange but loveable breed of band. The Philadelphia group has been favorably compared to everyone from The Beach Boys to The Grateful Dead, and Jeff Tweedy of Wilco once gave the group props in a turn as a playlist compiler for The New York Times: “They sound like real singers, people that really love to sing, as opposed to people that you kind of wonder why they’re singing.” Dr. Dog’s most recent album is 2008’s Fate, and it’s easy to see why Tweedy digs the group: The vocals sound a bit like him, and the band shares Wilco’s knack for penning songs that pair upbeat melodies with sigh-inducing lyrics. Onstage, though, Dr. Dog’s jammy tendencies make the most sense.
