The sound of a revving motorcycle engine is just as important to The Shangri-Las’ “Leader Of The Pack” as its timeless melody, a fact that lead Dum Dum Girl Dee Dee clearly took to heart while shaping the band’s “blissed-out buzzsaw.” The band’s debut for Sub Pop, I Will Be, runs the gamut of leather-clad rock ’n’ roll street toughs, sneering its way through girl-group melodramatics, self-destructive ’70s punk, and the grinding, psychedelic noise of the late-’80s college-rock boom. The much-anticipated follow-up is due this March in EP form. He Gets Me High promises three originals and a dreamy cover of one of The Smiths’ very best—and dreamiest—songs, “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.”
