Baroque pop outfit Field Music turned in a set of off-kilter tunes with its 2005 debut self-titled album and 2007's Tones Of Town, two records that hardly set the indie world on fire but nonetheless quietly and consistently rewarded listeners. With an ornamental strings section, a host of perky percussion tricks, and several offbeat harmonies, the quartet fills each stanza and section within its unpredictable, progressive song structures with familiar, lush Brit-pop, never allowing the dainty violins or harpsichord to overtake the inherent rocking. For producing songs that are so intricate and richly complex, Field Music find ways to remain light and breezy yet immensely arresting. A new 20-track double record from the lads, Field Music (Measure), is slated for a February release.
