Given The Flaming Lips' recent brush with the Oklahoma House of Representatives (which rejected “Do You Realize??” as the state song over a little obscenity and communist imagery on a band member’s T-shirt), their psych/sci-fi feature film, Christmas On Mars, and their highly theatrical and confetti-based live show, it’s easy to forget that they, you know, makes music. The Oklahoma trio’s latest offering, Embryonic, should help fans remember, as the double album is a sprawling behemoth of psych-rock that touches on the all the acid trips and ingenious studio flourishes that made the band so exciting in the first place, the musical equivalent of ingesting serious hallucinogens to enhance an already mind-bending space odyssey.
