Free Moral Agents, Zechs Marquise, DJ Major Taylor, Yeti Vs. Yeti, and Magicks at Reggie's Music Joint
What do The Mars Volta members do when they're not pursuing the band's mystically tinged prog-freakery? To judge by the sounds showcased in their solo projects, they pursue other routes into mystically tinged prog-freakery. Keyboard player Isaiah "Ikey" Owens and his other band, Free Moral Agents, harness unwieldy twinkles of electronic noise, Mendee Ichikawa's melodic vocals, and a hint of Mars Volta's desert-acid-trip guitar style, generally indulging more of a shadowy pop sensibility. Mars Volta multi-instrumentalist Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez, meanwhile, leads his own band Zechs Marquise into sprawling, improv-based fusions of jazz and rock that resemble Santana sitting in with Can.
