Funny Ha Ha, The Hideout’s monthly humor reading series, does live comedy a little different. Hosted by A.V. Club contributor Claire Zulkey, the series gives Chicagoans a break from hacky stand-ups yucking it up about penises and Hot Pockets—for the most part, at least. The group of humorists assembled by Zulkey consists of polished writers that know humor comes from time and precision, not screaming and pretending to be mentally challenged. Writers like Chicagoist’s Kim Bellware and Chicago Magazine’s Scott Smith will read essays instead of rapping out a memorized set. While this lack of spontaneity could be seen as a disadvantage, it demands an ample amount of thought from the performers, meaning the outcome’s all the better.
