http://congresschicago.frontgatetickets.com Girl Talk, Grand Buffet, and Hearts Of Darknesses at Congress Theater

Perhaps singlehandedly responsible for reviving the notion that mashing up songs is an art form, Girl Talk mastermind Gregg Gillis famously left life as a tissue-engineering scientist for sweating shirtless behind his laptop in front of an even sweatier crowd pulsating along to his delightfully bold song collages. Though he arguably perfected the sound on 2006’s Night Ripper, Gillis’ more recent Feed The Animals, from 2008, still feels like an effortless drive through a freeway of samples: Dissecting the myriad song snippets (Nirvana and Salt-n-Pepa meld together almost too well in one track) as they unexpectedly bubble up is addictively fun. Still, this is music that needs to be danced to, not broken down into spreadsheets, to fully appreciate.
