It seems like nobody plays it straight in the alt-country world these days. For 2006’s Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers, Memphis band Lucero brought in keyboardist Rick Steff for a haggard, squalling sound that channels The Replacements and Lynyrd Skynyrd more than the blatant Son Volt-isms of the band’s early days. Frontman Ben Nichols recently released a Cormac McCarthy-inspired acoustic album, The Last Pale Light In The West, but his solo ventures are no match for the Memphis quartet’s unified rock.
