Fans of San Francisco’s Matt Nathanson would be wise to check out what his Vanguard Records labelmate Greg Laswell has been cooking up in the southern part of the state, and anyone obsessed with David Bazan’s voice might want to listen as well. It’s a big pop sound as offered by a singer-songwriter, which means lyrics like “Won’t you let me give you a hand? / I have an extra I’m not using” accompany acoustic guitar, piano, and tambourine. (The results have predictably been slipped into TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy and The Hills.) That said, Laswell’s strong compositions have separated him from the dime-a-dozen bin, and made Three Flights From Alto Nido one of last year’s better albums.
